Soanierana-Ivongo Dock

As part of the School for International Training's study abroad programs, students must complete an independent study project. For mine, I chose to study the populations of several IUCN Red-Listed palm trees in a region where Missouri Botanical Garden was involved with several forest conservation and sustainable livelihood projects in Madagascar. The easiest way to access my host village, Manjato, was via a several-hour boat ride from Soanierana-Ivongo, the nearest port town in the area. The boat only ran three days a week, so it was packed with villagers and their market supplies, protecting themselves from the hot sun with umbrellas.
