Harbor Seal at South Sawyer Glacier

Harbor seals are sensitive to noise and rely on icebergs for protection during pupping season from predators like killer whales, so remaining quiet and keeping a respective distance was important. The South Sawyer Glacier in Southeast Alaska is in a state of retreat, calving often, and creating new ice conditions daily. The rock composition on the walls around the glacier are gneiss, which have colorful bands of red iron oxide and quartz.
