A Toad's Domain

A male American toad (Bufo americanus) looks upriver as he takes a brief respite from calling for a mate. Nearby, dozens of other males are calling for mates; only a few of them successfully amplex with a female. Amphibians are experiencing rapid declines worldwide, though fortunately such declines have not yet been observed in the Northeastern US.
