Small but deadly, the hognose viper

A hognose pit viper (Porthidium nasutum) decided to sit in the exact same spot for one month on a busy trail in La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. This small, venomous snake was smaller than a smart phone when curled up and was cryptic so the average person walking would not be able to detect it. I walked over the snake every day for at least 3 weeks before it was pointed out to me. This is the reason boots are required in the jungles of Central America
