Through the Eyes of General Washington's Valet

This photo was taken as part of a series of shots of one of General Washington's enslaved workers, his personal valet Christopher Sheels. This photo took me back to a time when I imagined his valet would be waiting for his coach to arrive. It started snowing very heavily when we did the shot, which just added to the timelessness of the photo. Jonathon Wood, the character actor who brings Sheels to life at Mount Vernon brought great dignity to his story.
