Life of a Slave

This was the last photo in my series on the enslaved character for Christopher Sheels. Jonathon Woods portrays him at Mount Vernon estate and this portrait really conveys the great dignity and grace he carries in the role. It started snowing as we were photographing and it felt like taking a step back in time. Sheels was one of the many enslaved workers during Washington's time and there are monuments to their work and sacrifice in the slave quarters of the estate. There is also a moving testament to their sacrifice with a Slave Memorial on the grounds of the estate.
