Clamming at the Oregon Coast

Lucy Chien (Alexandria, VA)
Photographed June 2010, Garibaldi, Oregon

“Oregon will always be a special place for me, having grown up there,” Chien says of this coastal scene. “Little did I know that even clams have a personality and know how to smile for the camera.”

The photographer actually posted a video of the famous clam pushing itself into water. Apparently, the clam figures out where it is with it's tongue and pushes itself to water. How interesting! http://youtu.be/13ZULB85GSs

This is actually the foot of the animal which is extended probably because it is stressed or dying. And its not actually a clam but a cockle. The shell has the more distinctive ribs that clams do not.

I just saw this picture on the National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest Site as well.

Love this picture. It is a winner I think

The patience of the photographer, the composition and the funny effect of the picture make this photo outstanding.

I like it.

Great composition, particularly with the clammer in the background. Good luck in the competition!

Hands down winner of the entire category!!! It's just so spontaneous and cheeky.

Sticks its tongue out and makes a smiling face. How cute is that?
