Grand Prize Winner

Indonesian artists make a few final touches before performing

Prakash Hatvalne (Bhopal, India)
Photographed June 2008, Bhopal, India

Hatvalne, who has worked as a photojournalist for the past two decades, was taken by the dancers’ fastidious preparations before a performance. “I love photographing people,” he says. “I also sometimes photograph landscapes as well, but there is no better landscape than a human face.”

I thought I had time to still vote, but apparently not. I agree with others here that I'm surprised this is the Grand Prize Winner. Although it is colorful and clear in interesting detail and personality, there were others I found more compelling.

at first i didn't care for it much, other than the vivid color eye-candy. But now after a few months of the image haunting me, i find myself coming back to it more and more. i find the "drama" on the dancer looking at herself in the mirror and being horribly critical. it's a female thing i'm projecting i guess - one that crosses all boundaries - since our value is so often judged on our appearance.

I think it is an odd choice. wonderful color

The 1st place winner did nothing for me either. I would have picked the People's Choice award.

I am a nay-sayer and do not this as the top photo. As another so aptly put it "it does not grab me". It does have great color but so do many others.

Please come to Indonesia to see a lot of "real picture" of Indonesia human...:-)
Congrats and very nice shoot !

I am puzzled by the award of 1st to this photo. I don't see what makes it superior to many of the others. Nice colors but it doesn't grab me.

This is really an amazing shot. Congratulations! The composition here, the poses, the timing, the cohesive elements all make this a real winner.

I love how the woman in the mirror is glaring back at the woman projecting the glare.

Good composition with mood ,expression and colur.. very good soft lighting which match the feminine character over all very nice picture

Gorgeous costumes and women with perfect make-up !
