In response to Bob's comments, I disagree to his point that people liked this because they like Buddhism. Maybe in some cases, but for others like myself it is the uniqueness of the scene, the contrast in size between the huge stone image and the young monks below, the contrasts of colors brought out by the lights of the candles, the detail of the artwork on the stone objects, and the feeling of humility and spirituality the photo invokes. It may also not be due to the technical skills it displays, but just the effect of the whole package that is so striking.

Bob, I could not disagree with you more. Looking at this photo on the web does not do it as much justice. I love the way the area around the candles glow, the young boy's look as if he is contemplating something and the giant head figure behind them which gives you a good sense of their surrounding settings.

I have to agree with those who say this is nothing special. I would guess many of the positive comments come from those who have a special liking for Buddhism and are reading that into the picture.

hm.. maybe it's just me, but I don't really get why this is the grand prize winner. Other finalists are much better. Sorry but I don't see anything special technically or compositionally or conceptually here.. Not the first picture of monks that won a photography contest that I've seen this year.. maybe it's a recent trend..

I will be punishment for this but this is just candid picture to me, no mine subject, all in focus lost three-dimension effect. This is why I do not know what is about it.

So beautifully peaceful and from Myanmar where it has been so distressed lately. However Buddhism is a peaceful and mediating religion.
