Hidden frog

Laurie McAndish King (Novato, CA)
Photographed September 2009, Mendocino, CA

King was experimenting with a new camera in a local Mendocino County garden when a frog paused for a moment on the leaves of a nearby plant. She snapped; it hopped. “I’ve gone halfway around the world looking for new experiences,” she says. “This photo will always remind me of the beauty in my own backyard.”

Also, Laurie, please let me know if you decide to sell blank cards with that image, I would definitely buy a box or two. I have printed out the image from your site and put it next to my computer.
Today I'm realizing that the reason I keep being inspired by looking at it is that it shows a beautiful vulnerable being sheltered and protected by a beautiful juicy plant that lets it see and be seen by the world outside. Safety and beauty together in gorgeous color!

I love nature photography. All your senses have to be on high alert for your eyes to see the image you want to capture. You were definitely honed in on your surroundings to catch this little one trying to hide from you! I'd like to get a copy of this for my frog-enthusiast niece. She loves it! Thank you for your beautiful work!

I vote for Laurie McAndish King's photo. It illustrates the truth that a photographer always must be wide awake and at attention. (That's true of a writer as well.) Of course, it helps if you have the proper technical skills, but such skills can be learned, whereas imagination cannot. What a great job! Felicitations, Laurie!

A perfect photo on multiple levels. I love it!

Hi Lorna, Thanks so much to you and to Rella (of Simply Succulent, the specialty nursery in Ft. Bragg, CA, where the shot was taken) for letting us know that the plant is Kalanchoe thysiflora or Paddle Plant.

Hi Pat. Yes, I DID have an excellent art teacher! And Doug Genschmer, if you're reading this, thanks a bunch!

I almost didn't see him...fantastic shot!

Such a wonderful and colorful composition - - a tiny universe of such rich and saturated colors! Location, timing and lighting makes this a winner image!

The sun,the moon and stars must have aligned to get this shot. What a perfect picture. Who trained your eye Laurie? You must have had an excellent art teacher in school.

You have my vote Laurie--and everything must have just been perfect, when you zeroed in on this shot--Even the tiny frog seems to be smiling--what beauty--the succulent and the frog. The colors,shapes-everything seems perfect. Go for the win--you deserve it.

The colors are extraordinary with a surprise bonus. I loved the little green frog hiding in the center. The photo is amazing and your were there to see and capture it. Thanks for bringing it back so we could see it, too. Barbara Lamb

Beautiful Picture from one Iowa girl to another Iowa girl!

What a great photo! I voted for it with pleasure!

A marvelous balance of color in nature - flora and fauna in wondrous harmony. A joy to ponder and appreciate such beauty in life. Thank you, Laurie. Extraordinary!
