I think there are millions of photographs taken in Varanasi
{ganga arati}with slightly altered composition.I don't understand why these guys send these boring pictures.

Easily the most mystical of the lot. The atmosphere of the ritual lingers...

Stunning picture. There's so much Smithsonian quality to it!

I was disappointed with all of your picks. I agree with comments on March 3, 2009.

I loved all of the photos but my 2 favorites are the grand prize winner and the one of the ceremony in Kolkata, India. Both have just a mystical/magical quality to them. As a painter, I am taken with the quality of light, color and subject matter in both photos.
As for the negative comments that have been posted....come on, guys! What is in your own backyard always seems boring. It takes new eyes to see the beauty there. And if you're disapponted, Donna Johnson, let us see what YOU can do. Talk is cheap, you know.

I always like this site b/c of the positive, interesting comments, unlike so many sites where ppl just 'behave' in such an ugly way, hyper-critical and generally putting others down with no personal consequence. I am thus a bit disappointed to see negative comments that are unhelpful and also not necessary at all.
This photo is stunningly beautiful: the motion, the color, the way it pulls the viewer into the scene. Love it. This and the 2 Native American themed are those most pleasing to my taste.

This picture is beautiful! I wish we had this kind of stuff in OUR back yard. I certainly does draw you into the picture.

I've been to this ceremony (October 2008), took many photos, and none of them could even come close to this one! It's beautiful!
