Window to the old chapel
Dan Monakil
(Van Nuys, CA)
Photographed October 2007, Taos, NM
The first San Geronimo Mission in Taos, New Mexico, was destroyed during an 1847 uprising. "From one of the damaged walls," says Monakil, "the view of the cemetery serves as a reminder of the more than 150 people who perished during the revolt." The remnants of the Spanish church stand tall, "as if still protecting its parishoners."
picture is unique and a replica of your soul

Window to the Old Chapel Excellent composition, great colors and spatial arrangement, and compelling scenery. I have never been to this area in the West - but this gives me a real feeling for the place. It's a stunning and original picture, and as a photographer, I do appreciate it! Doris Baum

Folks, Thank you for your kindness and artistic comments. When I first visited Taos I only know what I've read from brochures and ads. I'd like to preserve the trust and wishes of the Taos to respect the sanctity of this place. Deciding to capture the image thru a distant collapsed door was on purpose. It gives that fleeting moment in time to remember and not to forget what the people who were buried outside the old chapel has to give up to obtain freedom - their lives.

The shot was a masterpiece! Visually stunning! It is a great literary piece in picture... I wish I can meet the photo artist who shot this...

This photo brings me to the place. Great work of art and Amazing shot of the location. This makes me feel like I am the one standing in the middle of this landscape and over looking that door opening which brings a great view of the Old Chapel.

I'll be honest...I don't see this as the best photo of the bunch. It's nice...but the clouds are a bit burnt out...and there are at least 15 other shots I believe more worthy of all those votes...its nice...but not an image I'd remember.

I knew, from the moment you took a photo shot of Athena way back and my experience of you taking our family picture back then.. you take shots with your "soul" and see beauty beyond..you transform an ordinary scenery into a work of art.. Congratulations!

Truly a work of art. The essence of the place was captured in the shot. I would love to see the place and actually experience the feeling of being in that exact same place. =)

A picture that's worth more than a million words.
Speaks volumes about earthly graves not being the end of it all. The freedom that was born from many lives lost for it is not lost in the next generation of freedom fighters.

POV, composition, exposure, not too much PS,excellent. Worthy of Rembrandt, Van Eyck, Rubens. A photo within a photo. A glance into the past or is it the future.

Beautiful shot, vibrant colors, clear message.
It breaks my heart as a photographer to see other people posting how they stole the image from you to use as a desktop background or hang on their wall. I'm sure they didn't think to pay you for your property.......

Great picture. It threw me for a moment, because I took the same picture when I visited Taos in July of 2007. The skies in mine were not as brilliant, but the picture is awesome. I framed mine and it is hanging on our wall at home. Nice shot.
Posted by Rodd on July 27,2009 | 10:46AM
Did the photographer have the permission of the Taos Pueblo to take the photograph? If not, I guarantee that there was a large clearly posted sign nearby that declared it was prohibited to photograph there. Total disregard of a people's sovereign right to determine what occurs in their homeland is a huge contributor to all the problems in which our nation is currently embroiled. What is being viewed here as an artistic photograph is in actuality an arrogant, callous snub of a tribe's right to self-governance. And the colonization continues...
