The canoe and dock make the shot artistic. Without it the picture would be bland. Those who have not been introduced to the rule of thirds don't always understand the power. This is entire story in one frame.

I agree that the stark foreground is what takes this out of the misty water landscape into a great composition. The observer travels from the crisp reality of the boat and dock back towards the very Turner-esque background.

Very good composition, to me the foreground makes this photo work. Without the canoe and dock it's just another misty morning at the lake.

Nice moody photo, but the boat and dock are a decided detraction from the nature story.
