Pyburn had just settled into her 14th-floor hotel room when she looked down at an "old street slicing through the city, fat pillars of buildings in deep disrepair.... I now see that the juxtaposition of rooftops sets up an intriguing study of present-day life in Havana."

The same contradictions can be seen in Atlantic City. Beautiful hotels with slums around the corner. The same thing exists everywhere on this earth.

We are going to Havana in May and I would like the name of the Hotel if possible. My husband left in 1961 and our first visit back was 2003. He knows the devastation of neglect and we stay with family, but would like to stay here if possible for a night. You captured the true Cuba and it pulls at my heart strings. When visiting family in Santa Cruz, I was in tears at how little they have and the lack of the most minimal of what we consider necessities. Thanks for your photo and I hope to hear from someone on the Hotel name, Marsha Mullera Las Vegas, NV

I've been there. the photographer captures the contrast between the illusion and the reality of Havana after 50 years of neglect.
