Grady the pointer

The Natural World Winner

Marianne Soufas (Asheville, NC)
Photographed May 2003, Asheville, NC

Soufas describes this driveway photo of her dog, a German shorthaired pointer named Grady, as a "rhythmic pattern of spots and rocks" the painter "George Seurat might be intrigued by. Pointer-lism, if you will (sorry, Georges)."

I LOVE this photo! Where can I buy a copy?

This is such a fun photo! I think it fits into the natural category considering animals and humans naturally try to blend into our natural world by camouflage or other elements. It just goes to show how we are connected to the earth.

I don't think it's important what category they put this photo in. What is important is that this dog is beautiful. It's coloring is unique to him/her and can only happen Naturally. Look into his eyes, do you see what I see? A happy loving pet.

I disagree with the main comment, I think it is not misplaced because it is natural, it is amazing how the gravel and the dog match each other so well, it is out of the context for nature, we are used to seeing pictures of flowers and valleys, and sunsets.. why not think outside the box and see something as the dog and the gravel be as one, two completely different things in nature. I think its genius.

Wow. First of all, this shot is cool as heck and I give all the credit in the world to the photographer. But I completely fault the editors for allowing this image to be in the "natural world" category at all, much less to win it. If you are going to bother having such a category it should be reserved for subjects that came to be as they are with little or no human interference. Ain't nothin' natural about a purebred dog standing in a driveway surfaced with pea gravel.

Someone should make this picture into an amazing jigsaw puzzle!

The perfect camouflage.

Great photo, but I also agree with the comment that it is misplaced in the "natural world" category...

Oh, my God! The dog and the background merge into a beautiful photo!I am a dog lover and owner (cocker spaniel)and this photo made me smile! Dogs can do some things that are so expressive of their personalities!

Super photo! However, not every living thing is part of the "natural" world. Sorry, but pets, cultivated plants, etc. don't qualify.

This photo made me smile.
