People Harvesting Salt at Sunset
Hoang Giang Hai
The sun begins to set as workers harvest salt. “The image of diligent women working the salt fields reflects the hardship of this job,” says the photographer, who used a Canon EOS 7D.

magical, eerie, wonderful-- ghostly setting for high drama, spy film or travel adventure... amazing image that deserves recognition

good use of light and reflection-- the image is not what the eye expects and so you have to look at it more closely to find the sky in the sea

very stark as if the bull's days are numbered an about to be trumpeted by the spectators in the stands

amazing photography because of the depth and evenness. is a window to world

the symmetry and parallelism between the salt piles and baskets is striking. the harsh light is very reflective of the hash labor, so big thumbs up on this image as it gives not only a story, but lasting allegorical figure as well.

Gathering Salt at Sunset is gorgeous ~ the work's intent is layered generating a sense beyond beauteous and the Laborers ~ some what like Van Gogh's "the Gleaners" (of which there are several, like wise it works again in this contest) The rythyme and colors are conveniently grounded in the earthy patterns. It appears moving and still at once. once at twice if you wish. i believe the artist had a vision and carried it to fruition and the sum of the parts are much greater than expected.

what ever traveler hopes for - a perfect image depicting life in an exotic locale. Beautiful technically too, as well as expressive of the ancient tradition.

What a moment caught in time! This could have been fifty years ago, or fifty years in the future!! Love the capture of colors, the reflections, the subject matter. This, to me, is the most interesting of all. My second choice is, Monks Releasing Lanters. For much the same reasoning. Thank you for sharing these... Gigi

How is this a finalist? This is such a mass produced image from the region. If there was something unique about that would be something else but there isn't. I'm surprised at you Smithsonian.

A truly amazing photo in so many ways - It makes me think of the Bible verse, "What is man, that You are mindful of him?" My favorite of the 50 pictures.

I love the layers of this picture. It is simply heavenly!!! The light, the shadows, the clarity, as well as distortion of the fog are all beautiful elements of nature captured in this delightful picture. Thank you for sharing.
