Monks Releasing Lanterns During Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Monks release glowing lanterns into the night sky during the Loy Krathong Buddhist Festival in Thailand. The photo, shot with a Canon 50D, captures “the essence of peace and serenity” of the event as the monks release their negative thoughts through the flying lanterns and focus on the future, the photographer says.

good use of light and reflection-- the image is not what the eye expects and so you have to look at it more closely to find the sky in the sea

the symmetry and parallelism between the salt piles and baskets is striking. the harsh light is very reflective of the hash labor, so big thumbs up on this image as it gives not only a story, but lasting allegorical figure as well.
