Once upon a time, Miss America reigned supreme

Today, Fox, a widow, lives much of the year in a Georgetown house once owned by Jackie Kennedy. Luckily for the Smithsonian, says Shayt, she admits to being a "bit of a pack rat," so, though she eschewed the pomp (and circumstances) of her Miss America victory, she never relinquished her crown, now part of America's cultural heritage.
"The crown has seen better days," says Shayt. "It's been lent to the pageant a few times, and there are some rhinestones missing." But for those of us who remember when Miss America symbolized beauty and the best, even a battered crown still bedazzles.

My father had a few dates with Yolande Betbeze in Mobile, Alabama when he was young. He is 88 years old and we were just talking about her yesterday. I would love to connect them so he could talk with her. His name is Dan Buechler and he is from St. louis, Mo. does anyone know how I could get a message to her?

My grandmother passed away and I was given her hope chest, in it was a signed pic of Miss America 1951 about the hope chest, after some research I found the same phrase online, I am trying to find out about this pic because my grandmother was one to brag about meeting or knowing famous people and that is why it strikes me as odd because she never told me she met Miss America....Anyone with any info on the signed pic of Miss America 1951 stating that she hopes my grandmother (Im assumeing) enjoys her hope chest as much as she does hers (with I and mine underlined), any info would be helpful thank you

May I ask David Shayt if the 1951 Tiara is marked with the maker's name. I understand NYC jeweler Marcel Boucher (1898-1965) made some of the Miss America Tiaras. I am trying to learn which years he made, and are any of them on display - anywhere?
Does anyone know if Mrs Fox is still living in Georgetown ? Thank you for all replies.

Growing up in Mobile, sometimes my Grandma would let me go with her to the bingo games. One Saturday afternoon, we hopped the bus and went to the Abba Temple Shrine on Government Street for bingo. Amidst all the folks with comfortable "bingo clothes" buying their hot dogs, french fries and hamburgers from the concession stands I spied a lady across the way from us in a tweed suit with clip-on earbobs. I asked my Grandma (in her Hammel's dress with matching cloth colored belt and powder coming from the top of her bosom) who this lady was all dressed up. She said, "that's Miss America's mom"! It was the first time I knew about a Miss America from Mobile but I always spoke to Mrs. Betbeze whenever I saw her after that. She was very classy and I see the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

No one before, and no one since, has come close to havibg the magic that Yolande Betbeze Fox exuded even before she was crowned Miss America. She forever changed the way the pageant is percieved.
