Smithsonian Affiliate Museum

The National Canal Museum explores the history of the Lehigh and Delaware Canals through fun, hands-on exhibits that bring 19th-century canal technology to life. Museum Day visitors can also experience a historic mule-drawn canal boat ride at the discounted rate of $5 (rides are at 12, 1, 2, and 3pm). The locktender's house will also be open for tours.

Exhibits

Though often overlooked, women played an important role in many of the region's iconic industries such as silk mills, Bethlehem Steel, and Dixie Cup. Our 2022 special exhibition, “Beyond Rosie and Rivets: Industrial Women of the D&L Corridor,” incorporates photographs, tools, uniforms, and other artifacts that celebrate the the stories of women whose work helped drive the industrial development of our region.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
