Step back in time and discover the beauty and creativity of the earliest inhabitants of Hatteras Island as well as the diversity and complexity of Native American cultures from across the United States.

Designated as a North Carolina Environmental Education Center, the museum also includes several acres of nature trails winding through lush maritime forest. Part of the North Carolina Mountains to the Sea program, the trail includes a spacious pavilion overlooking salt-marsh water and provides an ideal spot for special workshops and programs.

Exhibits

Located in a building with the central structure dating back to 1880, the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center contains a nationally recognized collection of Native American artifacts, art, exhibits, and natural history displays on Native American culture across the United States as well as a gallery with information about the original inhabitants of Hatteras Island.

A full size long house located in one of the galleries provides visitors with a place to sit quietly and listen to a Native American story teller. A native potter will also demonstrate pinch pot techniques at 2 pm.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
