The Alabama Museum of Natural History is located in Smith Hall on the University campus. The Grand Gallery, exhibits fossils, rocks and minerals from the Coal Age, Dinosaur Age, and Ice Age, showcases our state fossil (the basilosaurus whale) and the only meteorite known to have struck a human.

Exhibits

Dr. Eugene Allen Smith was our state geologist in the late 1880's and his campsite with his wagon is on display.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
