The Foxfire Museum and Heritage Center allows visitors to imaginatively re-create the works and days of southern Appalachia. The 22-log-cabin village contains exhibits, artifacts, and crafts of 1800's Appalachia, as well as a gift shop featuring The Foxfire Book series and other crafts and gifts.
Exhibits include a tar grinder wagon that crossed the Trail of Tears, the only known existing wagon remaining. Foxfire's Artists-in-Residence, a blacksmith, weaver, and broom-maker, may be demonstrating that day, as well.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
