By Her Hand: Art of Native American Women & Photographs of Edward S. Curtis
Edward S. Curtis created groundbreaking photographs to capture the last vestiges of traditional Native American culture in the western United States. His mission was to safeguard their ‘sacred legacy’ by preserving their way of life, personal histories, and beliefs through photographs. This unprecedented exhibit combines objects from the collections of the SM&NC with Curtis' photographs to offer a palpable connection between object and artist and provide a powerful opportunity to experience the Native American message of beauty, heart, and spirit.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
