Smith McDowell House Museum is the oldest brick home in Asheville, NC. Built in the 1840s it was the home of wealthy business man James Smith, then of his son-in-law and Civil War veteran William W. McDowell. It was later home to a mayor, friends of George Vanderbilt, a distinguished doctor and a movie industry executive.
Our exhibits represent Victorian home life from 1840 to 1900. Each room of the house represents a decade from that period and is filled with furniture and artifacts of the period.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
