Exhibits

"Sordid and Sacred: The Beggars in Rembrandt's Etchings" features 35 prints from the beggar series by Rembrandt van Rijn, part of the John Villarino Collection. The prints evocatively depict the poor of Rembrandt's time, and include self-portraits of the artist as a beggar. The theme is carried into the present with photographs of the contemporary poor in South Africa by Zwelethu Mthethwa.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
