On April 3, 1860, a lone rider left on horseback from the gates of the Pikes Peak Stables. State-of-the-art exhibits illustrate the need, creation, operation and termination of the Pony Express and serve as a tribute to the legend of the famous overland mail service.
The 1860's Pony School opened in April, 2012. Visit our newest exhibit the, "Whimsical Horses" in the Messick Gallery, located in the Pony Express Museum.
Special for Smithsonian Day, we will have re-enactors from 10am -3pm roaming the museum. And in the Pony School the school marm will be teaching arithmetic lessons and hosting a spelling bee within 30 minute school sessions.
