Pioneer Museum of Alabama opened in 1971 for the purpose of preserving the history of the pioneers who settled this area. The collection started with one main building and a log cabin. The museum has become a living history classroom for the thousands of school children who tour each year and are fascinated by the various demonstrations conducted. Tourists and local residents enjoy the facilities year round. The Pioneer Museum of Alabama plans one of a kind visits for groups and offers several special events and exhibits throughout the year.
The museum has 15 buildings, a covered bridge, and an amphitheater. It is located on over 40 acres of wooded land that includes a picnic area and wetlands walk. The main building is divided into four sections. The west wing includes living styles of the late 1800's and early 1900's. It has a demonstration area for spinning, weaving, and quilting that is done on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The south wing has displays of a pioneer kitchen, native American life, Civil War and World War I. The agricultural wing has displays of farming, logging, blacksmithing, and carriages. Then the village center is a display of Troy, AL circa 1900 with original store fronts. The Foyer of the main building houses the Pioneer Gift Shop.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
