The National Memorial Day Museum in Waterloo NY, the federally recognized birth place of Memorial Day, commemorates through interpretive exhibits, the suffering of the Civil War that led to the origins of Memorial Day and the meaning of this somber holiday in the 21st Century.
First floor exhibits include a representation of an 1860 mourning room, a Civil War room including a body tag and shroud, a Memorial Day room detailing the founding of Memorial Day, a G.A.R. and Women's Relief Corp room. Exhibits on other wars are depicted upstairs.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
