The Museum includes more than 450 Russian icons, the largest collection of its kind in North America, and one of the largest private collections outside Russia. The collection spans six centuries, including important historical paintings dating from the earliest periods of icon “writing” to the present.
Approximately 200 icons from the permanent collection will be on view throughout the Museum's three floors of gallery space. The new, 3500 sq ft. West Gallery has opened since last year.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
