Museum Description: The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico (MAPR), celebrating its 10th Anniversary, is a private non-profit institution. Central to the MAPR's mission is the enrichment of the lives of diverse audiences by providing an even deeper understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts of Puerto Rico and the world. The MAPR offers guided tours for the general public, has a 2.5 acre sculptured-botanical garden, has a Museum shop, a 400 seat theater named after Raúl Juliá and an active donations and membership program.
Puerto Rican Context: From Colonial Rococo to Global Art is the permanent collection of the Museum on display. The show brings together works of art created by Puerto Rican as well as foreign artists that have contributed to the understanding of the trajectory of local art from the 17th Century to the present. The exhibition is composed of paintings, drawings, fine prints, sculptures, devotional wood carvings of saints, ceramics and installations.
The Gaze of Time: The Puerto Rico Tourism Company Collection, an exhibit composed of 48 works from the 1950’s through 1990’s by artists born or living in Puerto Rico. The tourism Company Collection gives the spectator the opportunity to gaze back on a crucial time: the period during which the Modernist project in the arts, evolved and matured on the Island.
Truths That Weary Me, an exhibit that reveals a new direction in the career of Cuban artist Williams Carmona. For this exhibit, the artist employs mannequins he has manipulated so as to portray characters from the world of magic realism. Using elements from the European Baroque and creating works that speak to viewer with voices that achieve universality, Carmona has fashioned his interpretation of the society we live in today.
