Owned and operated by the Montauk Historical Society,the Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest, still active lighthouse in New York State. Authorized by President Washington with construction completed in 1796. The nautical museum which is located in the Keeper's House displays an assortment of artifacts, historical documents and photographs.

The original Thomas Jefferson document dated 1792 and the original Washington document dated 1796 granting the United States for the sum of $250.00 the purchase of land known as the Turtle Hill plateau from the East Hampton proprietors as the site to build the Montauk Point Lighthouse.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis.
