The Montana Historical Society is “the” place to learn about the history of Montana and the West. The Museum features fine Western art—including one of the premier collections of Charles M. Russell’s works—and magnificent artifacts representing Montana’s Native American and immigrant history. Hours: Mon-Sat 9-5, Thursday 9-8. Closed Sundays and Holidays.

Exhibits

On exhibit: the Mackay Gallery of Charlie Russell Art, Montana Homeland exhibit—12,000 years of Montana history, Neither Empty Nor Unknown—200 years of Native American culture, and "Land of many Stories: the People and Histories of Glacier National Park," celebrating the centennial of Montana's National Park. Original Governor’s Mansion and Montana State Capitol tours, and other special programs.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
