The Milwaukee Railroad Shops Historic District contains one of the Midwest's most comprehensive collection of buildings, structures, foundation remnants, and rail yard that together formed a steam locomotive servicing terminal and rail car repair facility.

Exhibits

The Milwaukee Railroad Shops is a museum-in-the-making as buildings and locomotives under go historic preservation work. This railroad museum is home to the fully-restored, nationally-significant steam locomotive, Great Northern Railway No. 1355.

Completed this year is a new depot-style exhibit center featuring a large HO-scale model railroad exhibit that illustrates the various terrains the railroads had to overcome in building the railroad network westward.

Completed in 2011 is the reconstruction of the machine shop building. New construction work is underway on visitor improvements and four other historic buildings.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
