Miami Metrozoo houses more than 1,200 wild animals in a cageless setting that gives the visitor the feeling of embarking on a safari. Guests can remain cool throughout various water play areas, hand feed giraffes, ride camels, meet Nickelodeon’s favorite animal rescuer, Diego, watch an incredible Wildlife Show or the new Quetzal’s World show.
Exhibits
Amazon & Beyond, a 27-acre tropical American exhibit, opened at Miami Metrozoo in December of 2008. This exhibit features more than 100 species of animals like giant river otters, jaguars, harpy eagles and anacondas. It houses more than 600 individuals from central and South America’s Cloud Forest, Amazon Forest and Atlantic Forest. Quetzal’s World is a new 20-minute interactive show for children and families that opened at the new exhibit as well. With an original script, Quetzal’s World begins with a costumed storyteller who plays the role of the Quetzal, a resplendent, near-threatened bird that has been revered as sacred by the Aztecs and Mayans for centuries, and admired as a symbol of beauty and freedom. The audience is transported to a magical time and place through stories and songs where an ecological mystery has occurred. By helping to solve the mystery, audience members learn about tropical American ecology and animal adaptations. The performance is followed by the opportunity for audience members to ask questions and handle props and animal biological artifacts.
