Mendocino County Museum collects, conserves, and celebrates the stories, artifacts, and documents of the people of Mendocino County. Co-located with the museum is Roots of Motive Power, a volunteer organization that collects and restores historic steam-powered trains, engines, and logging machines.
Come visit the 150 year remains of the Chinese ship wrecked Frolic; a completely decked out "hippie van"; stage coaches, steam engines, Pomo baskets and displays about the famous racehorse Seabiscuit, who spent his last years here in Willits. In September we will have an exhibit of the building of the Golden Gate Bridge(celebrating it's 75th anniversary) and artifacts from local veterans.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
