Founded in 1877, the Mattatuck Museum has over 2,000 works of art and historic artifacts. Special exhibits and programs engage 40,000 visitors annually. Art for Everyone: The Federal Art Project in Connecticut. From the early 1930s to the outbreak of World War II, the federal government invested substantial funds in back-to-work programs, including projects in the arts. In Connecticut, 169 artists created more than 5,000 pieces of art.
