A unique blend of cultural and natural history, the museum offers seven galleries filled with hands-on exhibits that explore the island beaches, marshes and forests as well as the military and Coast Guard history of the area.
The museum will provide a program for children to become a "SSI Honorary Junior Coastie" where they will learn about knot tying, flag etiquette, Morse code/semaphore and participate in a rescue relay.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
