Opened in 2002, the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum is an educational non-profit that brings the story of Louisiana’s people to life with unique hands on exhibits and educational programs, including the lighthouse overnight and wooden boat building program.
Museum exhibits include replicas of the Civil War submarine Pioneer, the sternwheel steamboat Louisiana, Louisiana-built boats, outboard motors, and Louisiana lighthouses. The newly restored tower of the Tchefuncte River Lighthouse is scheduled to open to members late in 2009.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
