A campus of The University of Texas at San Antonio and a Smithsonian Affiliate, the Institute of Texan Cultures is dedicated to telling the stories of Texas and Texans. The museum showcases the contributions made to building the state by a diverse range of cultures.
SThe main exhibit floor features more than 20 cultures that settled Texas. Temporary exhibits include "Made in Texas," showcasing the innovation and artisanship of Texans, from the first personal computer and Dr Pepper to handcrafted jewelry. "Why We Came: The Immigration Experience" immerses the visitor in the immigration experience as they are cast in the roll of one of 12 actual immigrants who came to the U.S. seeking citizenship.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
