Exhibits

Heritage Museums & Gardens is celebrating its 40th Anniversary in 2009 with new exhibits, garden features and programs. A Bird in the Hand: The Carvings of A. Elmer and Cleon Crowell will highlight the museum’s large collection of Crowell bird carvings. The semi-permanent exhibit opened in the newly redesigned American History Museum in 2008 and will be on view through 2009. Going Places opened in the same building on April 6 and will run through October 18, 2009. The exhibit explores the culture, evolution, and eventual demise of horse-drawn transportation, from the early nineteenth century, through the industrial revolution, and into the 1900s and the dawn of the automobile age. Going Places has been made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is brought to you by Mid-America Arts Alliance. This exhibition was organized by The Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages in Stony Brook, New York.

Heritage Museums & Gardens is open from 10 am – 5 pm daily, seven days a week. The Old East Mill, labyrinth, Hart Family Maze Garden, Museums Store and Café, Art Museum with restored antique carousel, and J. K. Lilly III Antique Automobile Museum are also located on the grounds. The famous Dexter Rhododendron blooms from Memorial Day through mid-June, over 1200 hybrid Daylilies bloom from mid-July through early August and a new Cape Code Hydrangea Garden blooms into the fall. The 100-acre site will soon be home to a Flume Fountain in August and a Hidden Hollow Nature Discovery Classroom in the fall. The Shaker round barn that houses the car collection is also undergoing renovations that will be completed in 2010.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
