This restored Victorian mansion earned its place in history on September 30, 1882 as the first home in the world lit by a hydroelectric central station based on Thomas Edison’s system. Explore the museum and see original light switches and “electroliers” still in use today.
Guided tours of the museum invite guests to experience life in the late 19th Century at the dawn of the electrical age. "Speaking without Words" a temporary exhibit focuses on Victorian symbolism and the meanings behind everyday objects.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
