Hay House (built 1855-59) is a property of The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation and often called "The Palace of the South." This Italian Renaissance Revival palazzo is a National Historic Landmark because of its exquisite decorative faux finishes, collection of European paintings and porcelains, as well as technological innovations a decade ahead of their time, such as indoor plumbing and a 15-room speaking tube system. Three of the 7 floors open for hourly guided tours; last tour at 3 pm.
Museums and cultural venues participate in Museum Day voluntarily. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for individual museum content or participation.
