Gillespie Museum of Minerals at Stetson University Website »
The Gillespie is Stetson University’s earth science museum. Its collection of 20,000 mineral, rock, and fossil specimens--one of the oldest and largest in the southeast U.S.—has developed in its fifty years into a center for environmental education, including geology exhibits and displays on native Florida ecosystems. The adjacent Rinker Environmental Learning Center is the campus hub for sustainable practices.
Opening of Ross Allen and Florida Natural History. Join us for the opening of a new exhibition of photographs and memorabilia from the University's archives, representing the career of Allen, a former Stetson student, whose Reptile House at Silver Springs, Florida, helped to transform the nation's understanding of natural Florida as a tourist destination. Additional activites in Hatter Harvest student garden and the adjacent Rinker Environmental Learning Center.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
