Located on the ground floor of the Old Statehouse, Georgia's Old Capital Museum traces the history of Milledgeville and the surrounding central Georgia area from the Paleo-Indian period through Milledgeville's often turbulent years as the frontier capital of Georgia (1803-1868) and during the Civil War to its emergence as a modern and vital collegiate town in the 20th century.
In addition to artifacts of the Paleo-Indian period, the museum contains a full range of exhibits including frontier and Civil War memorabilia, agricultural implements, examples of 19th century decorative and domestic arts, and educational and institutional artifacts that document the founding of Milledgeville in 1803 to the early 20th century. A rotating gallery features exhibits of 20th century interest.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis.
