The Fort Decker Museum of History is a circa 1760 stone house museum that interprets the Minisink Valley's history. The building was built by a Revolutionary War patriot, Lt. Martinus Decker. It was burned in a 1779 raid by Tory Indian Army Captain Joseph Brant, and then served as a hotel for engineers on the D & H Canal in the 1820s and 1830s. Fort Decker served as a private residence until 1970.
The Fort Decker Museum of History has exhibits on the building's history, 18th century cooking techniques, bluestone and on the archaeological digs that were completed on the site. In addition, on Museum Day, volunteers at the Society will be conducting 18th century cooking demonstrations.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
