Established in the heart of San Francisco's Yerba Buena arts district, the Cartoon Art Museum is the only museum in the western United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of cartoon art in all its forms, featuring at least seven major exhibitions a year, a bookstore and a classroom space.
The museum presents permanent and rotating exhibitions. Check out our website for the most up to date listings. Our permanent exhibit traces the evolution of cartooning through its many forms including animation, comic strips, comic books, editorial cartoons, magazine cartoons, and underground cartoons.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
