The museum is the official military museum and military historical research center of the State of California. The museum is also part of the US Army Museum System.
The museum covers the military history of the State of California and its people from the Spanish colonial period to the current Global War on Terrorism. The museum also hosts a 22,000 volume library.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
