Exhibits

Watching Hands: Artists Respond to Keeping Well opens on Museum Day, and runs through January 13, 2012. The exhibit showcases the work of six artists who interpret the act of hand washing in innovative and unexpected ways. Recent H1N1 prevention campaigns have highlighted the importance of hand washing as one of the most effective ways to stay well. Sponsored by Georgia-Pacific and the CDC Foundation, and curated by Louise E. Shaw, GHO Museum Curator, this exhibition will stretch the boundaries of current public health campaigns through painting, drawing, graphic design, sculpture, installation, and new media. Making the connection between hand washing and keeping well, the work—all new for this exhibition--ranges from the humorous to the spiritual. The artists include: John Bankston (San Francisco); Didi Dunphy (Athens, GA); Joe Peragine (Atlanta); Katherine L. Ross (Chicago); Laura Splan (Brooklyn, NY); and James Victore (Brooklyn, NY).

The CDC Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization that helps CDC do more, faster, by forging effective partnerships between CDC and others to fight threats to health and safety. The Foundation manages more than 200 programs in the U.S. and around the world.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
