At the heart of the historic 26-acre estate stands a 19th-century mansion, filled with the stories of three Cedar Rapids families, and surrounding by multiple gardens. Annually, concerts, theater, programs, garden programs, and tours enliven the site and celebrate the heritage of a community.
A stop in the 1911 Carriage House provides an overview of Iowa history. Among Brucemore’s treasures are selected clips from the home movies of the estate's last owners, including behind-the-scenes on the set of “Gone with the Wind,” Hoover's presidential campaign stop, and University of Iowa's Heisman Trophy winner, Nile Kinnick.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
