The American Italian Museum & Research Library shares the culture, history and accomplishments of the Italian immigrants entering the United States through the Port of New Orleans.
Exhibits on display in the museum include the Inez Lugano Collection, with original oil paintings, miniatures and sketches; the Diamond Jim Moran exhibit, complete with mink neckties and a diamond studded cigar holder; the 1939 Krewe of Virgilians Queen Marguerite Piazza's Carnival ball gown; a replica of a St. Joseph's Altar covered with the traditional intricately designed baked goods and fava beans, known locally as "lucky beans"; the Louisiana American Italian Sports Hall of Fame; and many other mementos from local to internationally known Italian Americans.
Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis. Smithsonian magazine encourages museum visitation, but is not responsible for and does not endorse the content of the participating museums and cultural venues, and does not subsidize museums that participate.
